Our Country – A collaborative effort by Clifford, Michelle and Gabriella Possum
Digital Print 72 x 97 cm
Our Country describes the day to day activity of an area Clifford Possum & his family called ‘Our Country’ – Napperby Station. The painting shows a wedding celebration that is about to take place, and the hunting and gathering in preparation for it. This is an ariel, typical view of their country.
- The rainbow lines show the Napperby Creek in flood time.
- The five yellow tracks leading to the centre are the tracks of possums heading towards a water hole.
- The U shapes depict women sitting with a carrying dish called a coolumun with a digging stick beside them.
- Men are also depicted with the U shape, but the prints left in the sand are boomerangs and spears.
- The footprints show a man walking through the desert with a kangaroo on his back. The weight is causing him to drag his big toe and stumble forward.
- The five U shapes at the top of the piece depict five women making ceremonial headdresses with white cockatoo feathers and grass reed that is only used in wedding ceremonies.
- The white pods are witchetty grubs – a favoured bush tucker.
- The blue circles running from left to right with a line connecting them are underground water systems.
- The line connecting the water holes are foot tracks left from thousands of years of use.
- The large golden brush is spinifex.
- The large circle at the top of the piece is where the wedding will take place – on the male’s sacred grandfather’s country.
- The green bush vine within the rainbow lines are bush banana plants.
- The circular oranges areas are camp sites.
